Song Sung True
Shankar mahadevan, Kaityar kaljat ghusali, KSG, rabindrasangeet Shankar mahadevan, talk, indian express Shankar Mahadevan debuts in the film adaptation of the Marathi play Katiyar Kaljat Ghusali as Pandit Bhanushankar Shastri, a royal musician

His grandfather’s generation watched the play the first time it was staged 60 years ago, and he has grown up performing its famed bandishes in classical concerts. Katiyar Kaljat Ghusali (KKG) occupies the kind of place in the collective Marathi consciousness as Rabindrasangeet in Bengali, says Shankar Mahadevan.

Marathi actor Subodh Bhave has adapted this play into a film, by the same name. Based on the Marathi Sangeet Natak, KKG revolves around the rivalry between two musical greats: Khansaheb Aftab Hussain Bareliwale and Pandit Bhanushankar Shastri. When Mahadevan along with Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, were offered to score the music for the film, they grabbed the opportunity. After all, it would give them a chance Bollywood rarely offers: to explore a treasure trove of Hindustani classical songs created by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki.

But Bhave had an even bigger role destined for Mahadevan. When he was offered the role of Pandit Shastri, he couldn’t refuse. “I could relate to his character, his belief in the purity of music and the fact that he was true to himself. It struck me that this may be a role of a lifetime that I may never get again,” says Mahadevan, at the launch of the film at a south Mumbai hotel. The film’s publicity has almost entirely been built around his acting debut, with pictures of Mahadevan in the attire of an early 20th century royal musician at the venue; classical musician Rahul Deshpande plays Khansaheb. The film follows the clash between the two gharanas and how after years of attempts, Khansaheb finally defeats Shastri in the annual music competition to become the royal singer of the kingdom of Vishrampur.

Mahadevan has always had an air of candour about him — be it his uninhibited singing or in his experiments as a composer. We have seen his assured, confident appearances in music videos ever since his breakthrough 1998 album Breathless. Hence, his acting debut doesn’t come across as a surprise, as much as it would, had it been the more reticent AR Rahman. His attempt at another art form is also far removed from the flashy, hero-like roles of his colleagues Sonu Nigam and Himesh Reshammiya.

“When you are delivering hits, making the crowd swing with your performances and content with the gifts god has given you, you ask yourself, what else do you really need? When you push yourself further, it reveals a part of you that you didn’t know about. It’s like I used to live in this house and never knew about a room that existed. It’s been very liberating,” he says.

Since Mahadevan had no acting experience, he would arrive on the sets with a blank slate. “One of the first things I learnt is not to look at the camera and that a lot of it is the game of the eyes,” he says. Does his penchant for improvising extend to his acting as well? He says he learnt how to introduce unexpected pauses that would give a different dimension to his character.

The film, that is scheduled to release on November 13, also highlights Mahadevan’s almost Maharashtrian upbringing despite his Tamilian roots. “My wife and all my friends are Maharashtrians. Although there is a strong South Indian in me, the ambience in my house, culture, festivals and our eating habits all are tilted towards Maharashtra,” says Mahadevan, who grew up in Chembur, Mumbai.

Besides the film, he has his hands full, making music with Eshaan and Loy. There’s the upcoming Katti Batti, and then, Mirziyan, Rock On 2 and Ghayal 2, among others.

I have beautiful relationship with Akshay Kumar: John Abraham
John Abraham, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Shruti Haasan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Paresh rawal, Welcome, welcome Back, Welcome Back cast, Welcome movie Sequel, John Akshay, John Abraham Akshay Kumar, John Abraham Welcom Back, Akshay Kumar Welcome, Entertainment news While Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal reprise their roles from the 2007 film “Welcome”, the sequel has John Abraham and Shruti Haasan replacing Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif.

Actor John Abraham says doing the sequel of Akshay Kumar-starrer “Welcome” has not affected their real life camaraderie.

While Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal reprise their roles from the 2007 film, the sequel has John and Shruti Haasan replacing Akshay and Katrina Kaif.

Interestingly, John also replaces Akshay in the upcoming sequel of “Hera Pheri 3”.

John, who has shared screen space with Akshay “Housefull 2”, “Desi BoyZ” and “Garam Masala”, said the “Brothers” star in fact encouraged him for “Welcome Back” saying it will increase his reach as an actor.

“He was the first person I called up after signing ‘Welcome Back’ because I have also learnt a lot from Akshay. I have done ‘Garam Masala’ with him, he literally held my hand through that movie. We have a beautiful relationship that goes beyond films. We still talk every day. We met here last when he came to promote ‘Brothers’,” John said here while promoting the film.

“The only thing he said to me was, ‘Do this film, don’t worry about anything. This film will reach out to an audience in the country that you have never reached out’. I think he is absolutely right. This film will have the highest repeat value on TV.”

The actor feels audience should not compare the two movies as they have different storylines.

“‘Welcome Back’ starts where ‘Welcome ended’. The two have completely different stories. People should not make the mistake of comparing the two. They should watch it as a fresh film. There are three very important characters from the original film. In the first movie, Akshay got married to Katrina. So that story is over. This is a new story,” John said.

Having starred in a host of comedies, John has high regard for the genre, which he considers a “serious business.”

“Comedy is most probably the most serious business. To make people laugh is very tough. And when you have actors like Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah and Shruti Haasan in one film, it becomes classy. It is a massy as well classy film.”

Also starring Dimple Kapadia, the film is set to hit theatres this Friday.

Didn’t think about reactions before casting Shiney Ahuja: Anees Bazmee

Apart from that I did not think about anything else,” Anees Bazmee said.

Filmmaker Anees Bazmee, who is currently waiting for the release of his film “Welcome Back”, says he did not think about all the controversy surrounding Shiney Ahuja while casting the actor.

Shiney faded into obscurity after he was accused of rape by his former domestic help.

“I do not know anything more than movie making. I thought that in the film I need him (Shiney) and he can do justice to the role. Apart from that I did not think about anything else,” Bazmee told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

“I did not think about what will be the reaction… I did not think about all of that because the decisions I take are only for the films. I am a filmmaker and I do not need to think about anything more than that,” he added.

The cast of the film is currently busy promoting the film minus Shiney and according to the director the “Khoya Khoya Chand” actor was not in India when the promotions for the film started.

“When we started the promotions, Shiney was not in India. He was out and he just came back. Shiney is doing his level best to promote the film. But I think that the planning for the movie promotions are done by the producer and the promotional team they decide,” Bazmee said.

“Welcome Back”, which is a sequel to 2007 movie “Welcome” also features John Abraham, Shruti Haasan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Naseeruddin Shah in key roles.

Talking about Shiney’s role in the film, Bazmee added that he would be seen playing the “spoilt” son of Naseeruddin, who plays a blind don named Wanted Bhai in the film

“I took him (Shiney) purely because there would be a demand for such a role in the film…and he did a good job,” he said.

Villages of Ludhiana have been given a complete Haryanvi transformation as the city gets ready for superstar Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which is based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Aamir Khan will start shooting for Dangal in Ludhiana from next week.

In an exclusive sneak peek from the sets of Dangal, The Indian Express reveals the details of Dangal shooting.

This will be Aamir Khan’s second visit to Ludhiana, the actor had earlier shot ‘Rang De Basanti’ at Mugal Sarai Fort in Doraha which is now known as ‘RDB Fort’.

Four villages – Kila Raipur (historic village known for Mini Rural Olympics held annually), Narangwal, Gujjarwal and Leelan have been got a complete makeover to look like a village of neighbouring Haryana, which is famous for wrestling.

While all the shops and hoardings in these Punjab villages have been transformed into Hindi and Haryanvi and painted in bright hues, the villagers are also excited to see their favourite Aamir Khan shoot in their village streets.

Though the art and design team working on the sets remained tight-lipped, a source told Indian Express that Aamir Khan is expected to arrive in Ludhiana by September 15 and begin the shoot.

“His schedule is for almost two months here apart from other scenes which will be shot in Pune and Delhi,” he said.

The shoot of Dangal is proving to be a boon for the local villagers here, as the production team has ensured that the local talent will be employed to execute the works.

“All the civil works like restructuring and restoring of some old homes and giving streets that desi look of Haryana- all have been done by locals as we have given contract to them to ensure that they are not at any loss. Carpenters hired are local too,” added the source.

A deserted old home in village Gujjarwal will be shown as home of Aamir’s character Mahavir Phogat. A fireplace, some old boxes, an earthen pot, old chairs etc have completed the look of Phogat’s on screen home.

Besides this, an akhada will also be created in Kila Raipur.

However, the major attraction remains the old markets of Kila Raipur and Gujjarwal where hoardings of all shops have been re-painted. Also, the public welfare advertisements of Haryana government have been painted here.

“The only reason to create an artificial Haryana in Punjab was that we found it much convenient to shoot here. Also, the city Ludhiana is just 25-30 kms from the villages and it would be easy to travel from city to villages,” said the source.

A cobbler Harchet Singh from Gujjarwal whose shop ‘Punjabi Jutti’ has now become ‘Special Juttis’, said, “First we did not believe that Aamir would be coming here but now it is confirmed. He is going to enjoy Punjabi hospitality.”

“We have already told our relatives that Aamir is coming. Of course, it will not be possible for him to meet all villagers but a glimpse would be enough,” says Navdeep Singh, a grocery store owner.

Sources said that few scenes are scheduled to be shot at Government Senior Secondary School, Gujjarwal running since 1857.

Aamir Khan will be staying in Ludhiana city at a high end hotel. The art and design team landed in Ludhiana in June and work is on since then.

“There were plans to shoot some scenes in Ludhiana city but they have been shifted to Pune. In Punjab, shooting will be done only in villages of Ludhiana,” said the source.

Expect new cast in second season of ’24’, says Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor, who starred in and produced “24”, the Indian adaptation of the eponymous show, is geared for its second season, and says viewers will be treated to some new cast members.

Anil, who has starred in a season of the American “24”, brought a ‘desi’ version of the show to Indian TV screens with the same title via Colors in 2013. It was a refreshing change not just in terms of the concept and production values, but also had an impressive line-up of actors like Shabana Azmi, Tisca Chopra and Mandira Bedi.

Now a second season will soon be in place.

“We will have a new star cast, a lot of new people are going to be there,” Anil, who himself essayed Anti-Terrorist Unit chief Jai Singh Rathore in the show, told IANS here.

Asked if the trend of adapting foreign TV shows for the Indian small screen — the latest being “Sumit Sambhal Lega”, which is adapted from “Everybody Loves Raymond” — can be equated to the idea of ‘playing safe’, the 58-year-old shared: “There is nothing wrong with adaptations. It is, after all, a business. You can get a good story from anywhere, so why not?

“Some people make remakes of Telugu and Tamil (films and shows), some from English… So if you find something good and exciting… today the world has become one, so globally, wherever you get a good story from, you should go ahead.”

Anil spoke to IANS on the sidelines of a press conference held here on Tuesday for the promotion of his forthcoming film “Welcome Back”.

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor, who will be reprising the role of Majnu Bhai in ‘Welcome Back’, said the secret behind his great health and physique at the age of 58, was his positive nature.

The actor, who was smart in brown shirt, trousers and black shades, was in his elements at the press conference held in New Delhi today (September 1).

Anil Kapoor, who is the father of three grown up children Sonam, Rhea and Harshvardhan, was flattered when the journos said he still looked young and had the energy of a teenager.

Anil Kapoor said, “I think one of the reasons I look young is because I’m not dillusional. I’m a very happy person and I love making people happy, if there is any serious situation, I bring positivity into it by doing something or the other. That’s what everyone should do. If I come across any negative person, I make the situation positive by cracking some or the other joke. Many of my friends and directors say, ‘call Anil on the sets, he will make a positive atmosphere,’ and I think that’s the secret.

The actor is in Delhi for the next two days for the promotions of his upcoming movie ‘Welcome Back’ .

When asked about the same, Anil Kapoor said, “It feels so good to listen to this. I feel that somewhere it is my genes. It’s not about exercise, it’s not about fitness or diet, it’s your lifestyle. So what’s important is your lifestyle, positivity, not taking stress, sleeping on time.”

Giving it a hilarious twist, the actor said, “I remember people telling me that I was a very boring actor for years, since I didn’t rake any controversy, I didn’t have any affair, but it’s another thing that I was smart enough.”

“My lifestyle has been very good and I would give the maximum credit for the way I am and my fitness and the way I look is genetic. My grandfather, my father, the Punjabi blood and the North India power is in my blood.”

Anil Kapoor also warned John to be careful about what he says as he has to take care of the reviews of the film as well.

“My film ‘Biwi No. 1’ got the worst review ever, which happened to be one of the most hit movies of that year,” said Anil Kapoor. Shruti Haasan interrupted him by saying that it was a remake of his father and noted actor Kamal Haasan’s movie which had also received negative reviews. She said, “That was a remake of my dad’s movie which also got bad reviews. So, the great thing is that legends like Anil Kapoor and Kamal Haasan have something in common.”

Talking about alternative career than in movies, Anil Kapoor hilariously said: “Shruti Haasan is a great actress in Tamil and Telugu films and I have also secured my career in television as the second series of my show will soon be on screens.”

Shruti Haasan, who is trying her hand at an out and out comedy for the first time, said she is an extreme tragic or extreme comedy person so she wanted to try this genre too.

She said, “It’s a genre, I have never tried in Hindi cinema, so that is a thing I am looking forward to. I’ve done different kinds of roles, but I’ve never attempted a full on entertaining comedy, specially a film for the whole family to enjoy. I personally enjoy either severe tragedy or extreme comedy. So i think I’ve fulfilled that funny bone in myself.”

Shruti Haasan will be seen opposite John Abraham for the first time in Anees Bazmee’s ‘Welcome Back’.

Come next year, brawny Bollywood actor John Abraham will be on a weight shedding spree. He says he has to lose at least 20 kg for his film “1911”.

During a media interaction for the promotion of his forthcoming entertainer, John was asked if he would be ready to lose his muscles for the sake of a role.

To that, he said: “Of course! In fact, by next October, I have to be 20 kg lighter for a film that I am doing. So, I will start weight shedding for it.”

John later told IANS that the film is “1911”, a project which was to go on the floors in October 2014.

“1911” will tell the story of late Indian footballer Sibdas Bhaduri, who captained Mohun Bagan in the historic 1911 IFA Shield final when they defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment to become the maiden Asian team to emerge victorious in the competition.

The actor-producer shared that Sircar is “not too happy” with certain things in the script, and is “tweaking” it a bit.

“It’s a great script, but I can’t say exactly when we will go on floors with it. It will be a good film,” John, who has earlier produced films like “Vicky Donor” and “Madras Cafe” told IANS.

Being as health and fitness conscious as he is, is it a healthy practice to lose and gain weight for film roles?

“It’s okay if you do it gradually, and besides we do it under the guidance of experts… Nutritionists… There’s always proper guidance,” he said, and added that he keeps fit with regular exercise and by avoiding alcohol, sweets and fatty foods.

He pointed out that in general, he’s an atheist — also clarifying that while he is spiritually inclined but not overly religious — John shared that he considers his body as a temple. So, he believes in taking good care of it in a disciplined way.

Doesn’t he feel like gorging on goodies sometimes?

“No, I would not eat them. I actually don’t feel like eating them. In fact, if I eat anything oily, I will fall sick,” he quipped.

John was here to promote “Welcome Back” with Anil Kapoor and Shruti Haasan. The film releases on Friday.

Many people asked up not to go there, but we were firm on our decision and said that we would release the film in the city so that the people will get some relief from the tension.”
